Today’s Small Change: Clear the clutter.
Dump the Junk
What is clutter? It’s anything you own but no longer use, need, or love. It’s everything from unread magazines to clothes that don’t fit anymore to gifts you received but feel guilty about throwing out. And most of our homes are filled with this stuff! One of the tenets of feng shui, an ancient Chinese philosophy of nature, is to eliminate unused possessions to create clear spaces in your environment. The idea is that these spaces not only create space in your mind and life for the things you want but help reduce stress as well.
Today’s small change is simple: Tackle one “clearing clutter” project. Choose an area of your home that needs it — the junk drawer in your kitchen, or your linen closet — and give yourself 30 minutes to do as much as you can. You’ll be amazed at how much progress you can make in a short time.
Here are some simple steps to help you banish the clutter in your life:
- Ask yourself, “Do I really need this [fill in the blank]?” Do I use it, read it, wear it, or listen to it? Will I ever use it again? If the answers to these questions are no, it’s clutter.
- Put it in a box. You can donate the items you dispose of to charity, give them away, recycle them, or sell them. Just as long as you get them out of your home as soon as possible — otherwise they’ll end up back where they were.
- Go step-by-step. You can’t declutter your entire home in a weekend. Start off small — your desk or underwear drawer, for example — and go on from there. Build your momentum with smaller jobs before you tackle the garage, basement, or attic.
- Cut yourself some slack. If your heart breaks at the thought of losing something, keep it. But if it’s a sweater that you detest, why not lighten your load and get rid of it?
This is GREAT ! You know what I do? I keep a bag or box for the stuff that I decide as each day passes that I dont want or need anymore. I usu bring the stuff to work and let the staff and residents go through it and whatever they dont want we donate other places. It is VERY helpful in me keeping my clutter down cause my house is only about 900 sq ft, not inclusing the basement and I am a PACK RAT ! Great advice

I also like FlyLady - if you follow even some of the recommendations your home will be clean and clutter free in no time. Good luck! and thanks for the article.
I just wrote you a comment and it disappeared. Dang - anyway I was telling you about FlyLady - they take things in 15 minute increments - it’s amazing how much you can do in 15.
Actually I am pretty good about clutter, my husband gets mad because he says I am always going through things and taking them down to the youth ranch.
I need it! Thanks mama!! Hey, sorry to run out on you and Lori - I jetted out right at 4pm!
I hate clutter! Good luck!
I NEED TO GET MY SPRING CLEANING DONE KINDA LATE BUT NEXT MONTH I HAVE SOME TIME OFF TO GET IT DONE
What do you do when you live with a pack rat?? I like these tips, I just think some people define “I need this” differently than I do, ha ha.
I did this in my bedroom I took the whole evening and cleaned it and got rid of everything I didn’t use or need. I always use that saying “Do I use it or need it?” or “Have I used it or worn it in the last 6 months?” if it’s a NO I get rid of it and I’m loving all the room I have in my room now. The reason I did this was to create more room so when I used my Wii Fit it wasn’t so cramped and it worked to my advantage :p
My mother lives her life as a pack rat and it drives me NUTS she gets it from my grandma they keep EVERYTHING. It’s like everything has an emotional attachment!
Love it. Great article.
